Welsh: traditional name composed either of the elements rhon lance + (g)wen white, fair, blessed, holy or of rhawn hair + (g)wen. It was used by medieval Welsh poets as a form of ROWENA (SEE Rowena), regarded as the progenitrix of the English nation, and is now fairly common in Wales.
